Summerville returns seasoned coaching staff

Ian Rafferty is entering his sixth season as the head of the Green Wave Football program and will again be assisted by a veteran varsity coaching staff.

“Our staff is pretty much the same,” Rafferty said. “Having staff continuity is a good thing because everybody knows what to do and what to expect from each other.”

Ryan Charpia is back as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He is entering his fourth year in those positions. Ahren Self returns for his ninth year as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Other coaches who have been with the program for multiple seasons include Omar Nesbit, Carlo Jimenez, Marlon Pryor, T.J. Smith, Allen Smith, Caleb Strickland, Ken White, Jamie Tyler, Kevin Bellush and Tav Schwarting.

“We have a very experienced group and some of those guys have been together for several years,” Rafferty said.

Together, they led Summerville into the Class 5A Lower State finals the past three seasons. This past season, the Green Wave won the Class 5A Div. I Lower State title, but fell 35-21 to Dutch Fork in the state championship game.

Summerville finished the season with a 13-1 record while Dutch Fork finished 13-0. Summerville also finished the 2023 season at 13-1. The Green Wave finished the 2022 season with an 11-3 record.
