- She said she was going for “the Rachel”
While she’s a seasoned news anchor for the Today show now, Savannah Guthrie got her start as a journalist in the ‘90s when she sported a completely different look than the one she has today.
The 53-year-old reporter was surprised by a fan named Carol on the Today Show Plaza on Wednesday, Sept. 3, who remembered Guthrie from her days at the local station KVOA in Tucson, Ariz.
The poster featured an image of Guthrie from her KVOA days, which Carol said she found “online,” and read, “Watching you since then.”
In the photo, a very dark-haired Guthrie is reporting on the Olympics while showing off her helmet of bobbed hair.

“Oh my gosh, hi, well welcome, and I think we don’t need to see that,” Guthrie said, jokingly covering up the image.
“I disagree!” her Today co-host Craig Melvin insisted.
“It was very ‘90s, I think I tried to have ‘the Rachel,’ ” Guthrie said, referencing Jennifer Aniston’s iconic Friends haircut for her character Rachel Green.
The NBC morning show anchor continued to joke saying, “Thanks for coming, now we can burn that.”

Weatherman Al Roker couldn’t help but tease Guthrie about the photo, saying, “That’s crazy how you used to dye your hair black!” prompting her to clarify, “No, that’s my natural hair color. Let’s change the subject.”
Guthrie has been candid about her varying hair colors through the years, discussing her differing looks in 2021 when she celebrated her 10-year Today anniversary.
When asked by co-host Dylan Dreyer if there’s a look she’d want to bring back, Guthrie joked, “No, mostly it’s like, ‘Never try that again.’ Mostly it’s like, ‘What was I thinking?!’ ”
There’s also one particular hairstyle in her roster she remembers with regret: the auburn red hue she rocked in 2013.

“I don’t know why I thought I needed to dye my hair red that one time,” she recalled. “I just went out one day and dyed it red one day and came in [to the show] the next day and all the bosses were like ‘Oh, looks good.’ ”
