Middlesbrough closing in on David Strelec signing

The move has not yet been finalised and minor details are still being resolved, but Boro have made a breakthrough in talks with Slovan Bratislava over the last 36 hours.

And when fresh reports from Slovakia that a deal is now on the verge of being completed were put to Boro boss Rob Edwards after Saturday’s win over Sheffield United, he said: “We can’t say too much at the moment. There might be an element of truth in that, but I can’t say too much right now.”

The signing of Strelec would be another major transfer boost for Boro, with the Slovakian international identified as a leading target back in January when Emmanuel Latte Lath was leaving the club.

Boro were unable to strike a deal in the winter window but Strelec remained very much in their thinking and was again a top striker target for the Championship club this summer.

Because of Slovan Bratislava’s European qualification fixtures, there was always an acceptance any deal for Strelec would most likely have to be late in the window.

And while there is still work to be done to wrap up the signing of the 24-year-old, there’s a growing confidence it’ll be done ahead of Monday’s 7pm deadline.

As revealed by the Northern Echo earlier this week, Boro were targeting two strikers in the final days of the window.

Kaly Sene’s arrival was confirmed on Friday night, with the 24-year-old making his debut from the bench against the Blades, and there’s now every chance he will be followed through the door by Strelec.

Edwards was delighted with Sene’s immediate impact, with an eye-catching display from the bench on Saturday.

He said: “Kaly looked really bright. He’s got real pace and is very direct.

“He operates well in the outside channels as well as being a nine, which gives us that flexibility because he can play in any of those three forward positions.

“If we want to play with two strikers obviously we can do that as well with the number we’re starting to get in those areas. I think we saw little glimpses from him today and there will be more to come.”
