Las Vegas hotel room rates spark mixed reactions among tourists

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — As Las Vegas grapples with a summer tourism slump, visitors are expressing mixed opinions about the affordability of hotel room rates.
Valentine Georgina, visiting from San Francisco, described her recent trip to celebrate her birthday on the Strip as “expensive, very expensive.” She said, “I’ve been here before and it was totally different. Everything was totally different. As far as room rates. As far as buying food. As far as comps.”
In contrast, David Allen, a tourist from London, said, “We come here every single year because it is such a good deal.” He added, “We take advantage of the extremely cheap and very very good standard hotels – and the food, everything that goes with it seems to be cheaper here than anywhere else.”
According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the average daily room rate on the Strip this past July was $164 a night, which is $9 less than July 2023.
Downtown rates also saw a $9 decrease compared to the same period in 2023.
Alan Feldman, a long-time gaming executive with UNLV’s International Gaming Institute, advised travelers to “do your own research” and noted that even expensive rooms on weekends can be significantly cheaper during the week. “For Las Vegas, even those expensive rooms on the weekends can be half the price during or less. So be flexible,” he said.
The average daily room rate on the Strip for all of 2023 was $204.42, while through the first seven months of 2025, it stands at $203.78, a difference of just 64 cents.
Feldman emphasized the importance of international visitors, stating, “International visitors are really, really critical for not just Las Vegas, really for the United States, because international visitors tend to come, stay a little longer, and, frankly, spend a little more.”
Feldman also highlighted the impact of inflation and the downturn in international visitors on hotel prices, suggesting that the perception of value may vary among tourists.
