Kate McKinnon is finding the humor in her latest medical diagnosis.

Speaking to People last week, the “Saturday Night Live” alum and “Barbie” star was asked about the last photo she took on her phone, which led her to share a story about the rare but benign condition she recently learned she has called geographic tongue.

“I took a photo of my tongue and sent it to an actor friend of mine,” McKinnon explained to the outlet. “We both have the same medical condition, which is called geographic tongue. Your tongue sheds in patches and looks like an atlas, hence the name ‘geographic tongue.’”

Although she admitted, “It’s gross,” McKinnon and her friend are not letting it bring them down. “We brag about how geographic we are on any given day. Maybe I shouldn’t be saying this in a magazine,” she added.

According to Mayo Clinic, geographic tongue is an inflammatory but harmless condition that affects the surface of the tongue. Normally, tongues are covered in tiny, pinkish-white bumps called papillae. In geographic tongues, some areas are missing papillae, resulting in red patches that give the tongue a map-like appearance. While this condition can make some people more sensitive to certain foods, such as spices, salt, or sweets, it is generally considered harmless.

The American Academy of Oral Medicine estimates that only 1 to 2.5 percent of people have geographic tongue.

McKinnon’s unique tongue feat seemingly isn’t holding her back in her career. She was one of the longest-running female cast members in ‘SNL’ history, joining the cast during Season 37 and leaving at the end of Season 47.

Since her exit, McKinnon has added children’s author to her resume. Her second children’s book, “Secrets of the Purple Pearl,” comes out on Sept. 30. She also currently stars in “The Roses,” a reimagining of the 1989 classic film “The War of the Roses,” which came out on Aug. 29.
