Manchester United’s Benjamin Sesko set to miss around a month with knee injury
Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko is set to be sidelined for around a month with a knee injury.
The Slovenian forward was not available for his nation during the current international break after sustaining the setback in the Premier League match at Tottenham Hotspur on November 8.
While the 22-year-old’s timescale of absence is dependent on his rehabilitation, it is anticipated he will be sidelined for between three and five weeks.
A serious injury to the Slovenian would have been a major blow for Ruben Amorim, who is set to lose attackers Amad (Ivory Coast) and Bryan Mbeumo (Cameroon) to the Africa Cup of Nations, which is taking place from December 21 to January 18.
AFCON spans six Premier League fixtures (Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leeds United, Burnley, Manchester City), as well as an FA Cup third-round tie.
Sesko, himself a second-half substitute during United’s 2-2 draw in north London, was unable to finish the game following a fine, potentially goal-saving tackle from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven in the 88th minute.
The striker has registered two goals and one assist across 11 Premier League appearances, following his €76.5million (£66.4m; $89.1m) summer arrival from RB Leipzig.
Amorim suggested in his post-match press conference after Spurs that United could even be active in the transfer market in January but given their significant spending last summer and the need to invest in other areas to improve the squad, spending heavily on an additional striker appears unlikely.
United return to action following the international break against Everton at Old Trafford on November 24.
