Rothwell on how Rangers are trying to correct midweek mistakes

Rothwell, who arrived from Bournemouth in June, was part of the group who saw off Panathanaikos in the Champions League second-round qualifier, five weeks on from the start of pre-season.
And the 30-year-old, who admits it’s been a test for the group to learn a new style of play in such a condensed pre-season, still wants the group to “put on a show” in Lanarkshire as Russell Martin’s side aim to get their league campaign off to a winning start.
He said: “It’s going to be fast and erratic at the start of the games, I think, and it’s down to us to hopefully take control of the games and build some momentum as quickly as we can. Everyone’s going to want to beat us, so we want to go out there and put on a real show, but ultimately, it’s a result-based business and we’re going there to win the game.
“We know as players it’s going to be massive and you go into every game knowing that a quick start is going to be massive. And getting off to a winning start is what we want to do. So, as I say, we’ve had a couple of days to recover from midweek and the lads are raring to go for tomorrow.”
The result over two legs against the Greek side ought to give Rothwell and his teammates confidence. Building a style is one thing but he knows that it will only see the daylight at Rangers if wins are achieved along the way.
“It has to [give us confidence]. It was a tough tie. And then, going out there, we didn’t want to just go and protect the lead,” Rothwell says of the 1-1 draw in Athens that earned a 3-1 aggregate win.
“We obviously wanted to go out there and win that game as well, but ultimately at the end of the day, it was just about getting through and winning the tie, which thankfully we did and that can put us in a good place come the start of the Premiership.
“I think it’s a bit strange to be playing European games before the actual season’s even started, but it’s good. It gives us a chance to go out there and put the things we’ve been working on into practice and it becomes real. They’re games you need to win, so thankfully we managed to do that over the two legs, but now our focus is fully on tomorrow.”
While Rothwell has played for Martin before, others are learning an intricate system and style for the first time. There hasn’t been much turnaround this week since the group landed in the early hours of Thursday morning but with that said, there was time to flesh out a few details that require refining.
“We’re trying to implement a new style and trying to do that with less training because there are so many games. To be able to come through the games and get the result we wanted, that’s the main thing at the end of the day,” he added.
“It’s been tough to try and implement stuff out on the pitch. It’s been a lot of meetings and video-based stuff just seeing where we can improve on things and make things a bit smoother. Thankfully, that’s given us the time to do that and we had a session outside today, which gives us a little chance to work on things. So, hopefully come tomorro,w there’s an improvement from Wednesday night.”
